Madarao Kogen Mountain Resort
MadaPOW!

AL_experience_discover_view

Frequent, gigantic Siberian winter storms passing over the Sea of Japan results in the crystal-like, fluffy and deep powder, famously nicknamed MadaPOW.

Skiing and snowboarding in Japan is unlike anywhere else in the world and Madarao has begun to redefine Japanese snow holidays by giving visitors to Madarao the best conditions in Japan, along with small crowds and inexpensive lift tickets!

Madarao Mountain Resort, also known as Madarao Kogen, sits on the border of two of Japan’s snowiest prefectures: Nagano and Niigata. Located between the resorts of Nozawa Onsen and Myoko Kogen, Madarao is easily accessible via the snowy and beautiful town of Iiyama ("ee-yama"). A comfortable 100-minute Shinkansen (bullet train) ride from Tokyo followed by a 25-minute shuttle or taxi up the mountain. Simply put, you can begin those deep powder turns within a day of arriving in Japan! So, if you want to waste no time and get straight to enjoying your Japan snow trip, then an Active Life experience is for you.

Best Ski Resort in Japan for Beginners

Active Life in Japan provides a wholesome skiing experience for all, whether you are a complete newbie or an advanced skier. For those who are new to the sport, our Palcall Tsumagoi by Active Life resort in Tsumagoi is perfect for beginners and intermediate skiers.

This is the largest resort in the Karuizawa region and provides the ideal introduction to skiing quality powder snow.

For families or larger groups with individuals who would prefer to try snowboarding rather than skiing, Palcall boasts some world-class terrain that makes the spot suitable and attractive for prospective snowboarders. Everybody wins!

And while Tsumagoi is one of the best ski resorts for beginners in Japan, it can also provide several challenging runs for the more established and experienced ski enthusiasts.

Of course, a ski experience is about so much more than the powder, but the broader experience itself. With over 135 luxurious rooms with the most incredible views overlooking Mt. Asama, you’ll be certain to enjoy a vacation like no other.

Best Ski Resort in Japan for Advanced Skiers

If you are an advanced skier and you are looking for challenging runs with an endless supply of premium-quality snow, then Madarao is worth a look! Active Life Japan has 2 hotels in Madarao: Active Life Madarao Japan and Xplore by Active Life, so you’ll be certain to find a hotel that suits your tastes and requirements.

One of the biggest selling points of skiing or snowboarding in Madarao is the fact that 60% of the mountain is left entirely ungroomed, thus offering a natural, off-piste experience that you’ll be hard pressed to find elsewhere.

Further to that, for advanced skiers looking to try their luck on a naturally formed halfpipe, you’ll find the Sawa Natural Pipe on the Madarao terrain map! This grants an excellent opportunity to take your skiing to the next level and try out some new moves.

OUR HISTORY

Beginning with renovations in 2016 Active Life Madarao has become one of Madarao Kogen’s finest hotel offering. We have since added  Xplore by Active Life, along with our very own international ski school, inter-resort shuttle service, equipment rentals and much more!

WHAT OUR GUESTS SAY

Exceptional
Everything about it. I enjoyed my stay. As a solo traveler, everyone was friendly and hospitable. I hope I can come back soon and I will definitely recommend it to my snowboarder friends! It’s very near the ski area, there are many restaurants/ cafes nearby. I hangout every night in the bar, I met new friends and the hosts are there to mingle with everyone. It’s like a small family. When I had some requests, they were openly providing/ helping. I’m very happy with my stay overall! Cleanliness is a 10 too! That’s one of the most important, and I want to add safety too!

Brilliant Stay
From the moment we walked in, we felt incredibly welcomed and like one of the Explore family. The staff, particularly Lisa, went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. Our room comfortably fit our group of three people and the beds were incredible - just perfect after a long day of skiing. The hotel is well located, just a short walk to the slope and rental shop, and it has a low key community vibe that suited us perfectly. We highly recommend staying at Explore and are already planning our trip for next season.

Stop looking, stay here

Hakken is a fantastic little hotel, right next to the slopes. Great spacious rooms with tatami, good drying room and excellent breakfast. The owners could not have been more accommodating and the place soon felt like home. Beer on tap and cosy bar after a long day on the slopes - what more could you want?

5 stars holiday

The Hakken is a small hotel which is run by PK and Kaylee whose aim for you to have great holiday.  The double rooms are very comfortable and have everything that you need.  There is a ski room, breakfast room and a bar that serves excellent food.  There is a private Onsen, hot hub, which is a great bonus in the evening after a day on the snow.

All the staff were very helpful, made dinner reservations, helped with equipment hire and anything else that we needed.   The hotel is ski I ski out and is in easy walking distance to most bars and restaurants.  The free ski and snowboarding lessons are a great bonus.  The young instructors were very professional and this was definitely an added bonus that helps the active life group stand out.  We will definitely be recommending this hotel to others and will be back next year.

Snow condition was excellent when we arrived at Iiyama station. Although a clear direction from bus stop to the hotel entrance was informed, we took a Jumbo taxi which only cost 2-3k JPY more than the bus ride for 4 persons, a snowboard bag and 4 luggage. The room is spacious in size, with new comfy beds and towels, and has the nicest view. Very good breakfast and dinner, kids play area, relaxing bar. My girls love the brownie at coffee corner. The most valuable asset of the hotel is the staff. They are very smart, hard working, extremely helpful and friendly. Thank you all very much for taking care of our stay. Cheers!
