Located in Nagano, with direct access from Tokyo on a 2-hour bullet train, the
resort offers 20 chair lifts and easy access (within 40 mins) to neighbouring resorts like Myoko and Nozawa Onsen. Madarao is growing a reputation for openly encouraging inbound tree-skiing within its bowl-like terrain!
Active Life Japan owns and operates 2 hotels, 1-5 minutes walking distance to
Madarao Kogen: Active Life Madarao and Xplore by Active Life. Active Life Japan
also offers an English-speaking International Ski School in Madarao, along with
Miyuki Snow Sports, our retail and rental operation servicing all of Madarao Resort guests. As one of Madarao’s largest employers, we offer an immersion into the Japanese winter resort lifestyle and a working-holiday unlike anywhere else.

Employment:
- Start mid-December 2024 to early/mid-March 2025 (varies with positions)
- Accommodation and Meals provided (breakfast and dinner).
- Paychecks through a legitimate Japanese payroll system.
- Regular time off to ski, snowboard, and travel
- Working hours vary depending on your position, generally range from 20 – 40 hours per week, with plenty of time to ski and ride the beautiful, DEEP, FLUFFY MadaPOW!
Chef / Sous chef
Fancy yourself a whiz in the kitchen? We are after talented and passionate Sous Chefs and Kitchen Hands to work across several of our hotel restaurants and bars for breakfast, lunch, dinners and bar hours (shift work).
Desired skills & attributes:
- Proven kitchen experience
- Strong communication skills (English)
- Excellent time management and organisation skills
- Happy with some early starts and late nights
- Exceptional Food Safety & Hygiene standards
- Ability to work under pressure without compromising the quality of food delivery
- Open to different cuisines and learning new things quickly
- Attention to detail with the ability to multitask
- Happy to take direction and receive feedback
- Basic customer service skills and the ability to work as part of a team or solo
- Willing to help set-up and pack-down hotels at the start and end of the season
- Flexible, adaptable and open to cross-training across other functions and fill in other functions across the hotels as required
Requirements:
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in a commercial kitchen (or relevant experience)
- Eligible for the Japan Working Holiday Visa (if not a Japanese Citizen)
- Must be able to provide 2 relevant references
Rental Shop Manager
Responsibilities:

Supervise the daily activities of the rental shop team.

Ensuring the best quality customer service delivered, engaging with guests while they navigate through the rental department; including answering questions, educating them on the fit and safe use of equipment, assisting guests with boot selection and proper
fitting, as well as other services i.e. waxing. -
Schedule Rental Shop team and manage personnel, make sure that team enters accurate working time into time keeping software.

Provide on- going training for staff development, provide direction and feedback to staff as needed.

Process daily cash sales, and coordinate with hotel manager and Finance for safe keeping.

Coordinate with hotel managers, and ski school manager to ensure accurate information flow, maximize in-house guest turn over, and up sale classes.

Organize and execute equipment repair, maintenance, and testing.

Maintain a clean and organized work environment.

Oversees maintenance of stock, displays, signs, and inventory; manages inventory.

Use resort reporting for monitoring sales product mix, discounts, and refunds.

Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Oversee all safety policies and procedures.
Qualified Candidates:
- Have a good product knowledge of rental equipment as well as overall skiing / snowboarding knowledge.
- Fluent in English (Japanese is beneficial).
